(STATEHOUSE) - Governor Daniels is proposing a $400-million health program he says would bring health insurance to at least 120,000 Hoosiers who don’t have it.

Daniels is calling for at least a quarter-a-pack increase in cigarette taxes, with the exact amount up to legislators. That money along with federal matching funds would pay for $1,100 medical savings accounts for low-income Hoosiers, plus anything not spend up to $600 will be returned to the insured.

Daniels says even Hoosiers who already have insurance would benefit. He says getting coverage for the uninsured would reduce other families' premiums by an average of $950 a year.
