(STATEHOUSE) - Indiana House Republicans are calling for a scaled-back version of a crackdown on illegal immigration rejected by both parties in this year’s session.

Only 19 legislators, all republicans, supported a bill which would have denied even emergency care to illegal aliens. Kokomo representative John E. Smith voted against that bill, but says that provision's been dropped, along with penalties for those who hire illegals what remains is a ban on non-emergency benefits such as welfare, something already included in federal law and a promise of tougher sentences for fake ID's.

House Minority Leader Patrick Bauer says the penalties for hiring illegals are the one thing they should have kept.
