No Veteran Left Behind
(UNDATED) - About 20 veterans from five states have made a five-city tour of Indiana’s 4th Congressional District, trying to tilt voters toward republican incumbent Steve Buyer’s democratic challenger.
"No Veteran Left Behind" has waded into House and Senate races in Kansas, Missouri and now Indiana to try to unseat republican incumbents. Buyer chairs the House Veterans Affairs Committee.
Convoy organizer and Vietnam veteran Doc Barnes of Topeka, Kansas, is steaming over last year's near-flatline budget, and while this year's proposal increases spending 6%, he's suspicious of a review of payouts for low-level disabilities. Buyer has said the committee should look at a possible lump-sum buyout of those clients to return the V.A. to focusing on serious disabilities and low-income veterans, as it did until ten years ago.
Democratic nominee David Sanders joined the convoy through Bloomington, Martinsville, Indianapolis, Lebanon and Lafayette. He says he'd oppose any attempt to charge vets a premium, or to increase the $8.00 co-pay for drugs. The White House has proposed both. Buyer defeated sanders 69% to 28% two years ago.
