President's Decision Affects I.U.

Last updated on Friday, July 21, 2006

(BLOOMINGTON) - President Bush has vetoed a senate approved bill that would’ve expanded federal funding for research using embryonic stem cells.

White House officials say this is a matter of principle and the president does not want to destroy a living thing, in the name of research.

Officials with the I.U. Centre for Bioethics say this puts their research in the status quo, like much of the nation. As a publicly-funded university, I.U. officials say they have to comply with federal law, in terms of research. They say, in trying to find cures for some illnesses, progress will continue to be "slow going."
