(STATEHOUSE) - Senate Democrats say it’s time to establish universal health insurance in Indiana.
Massachusetts and Vermont have passed laws making health insurance like car insurance: you have to have it, period, and the state sets up ways to fill in the gaps. Senate Democrats say it's time to follow suit.
Assistant Minority Leader Vi Simpson says they're drafting a plan, but says the specifics are less important than getting something passed that covers everyone without sacrificing the ability to choose your own doctor.
Democrats will ask a study committee in two weeks to launch a summer review of the best way to accomplish the goal, with an eye to passing a bill next year.
