(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - On a voice vote, the U.S. House passed the Senate’s amended version of the “Respect For America’s Fallen Heroes Act”, co-sponsored by 4th district Indiana Congressman Steve Buyer.

The measure now heads to the White House for President Bush's signature. It prohibits protests within 500 feet of a funeral at a national cemetery, for an hour before or after the funeral. The penalty is up to $100,000 fine and one year in jail.

The act would have no bearing on other funerals, which would be subject to state law. Indiana has such a law. The bill is aimed to prevent a Kansas church and others from disrupting funerals.
