Buyer Says Theft Of SS Numbers At Risk
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - House Veterans Affairs Chairman Steve Buyer calls the theft of personal data on millions of vets “disappointing,” but says there’s no indication anyone has tried to put the stolen computer disk to use.
Buyer says the V.A. didn't do anything wrong. A longtime analyst was working from home, and someone burglarized his house.
But the Indiana republican says that's not much comfort to more than 26-million veterans whose social security numbers are now at risk.
Buyer says he raised the possibility of not disclosing the theft, to avoid alerting thieves who may not realize what they've got. But he says the V.A. concluded veterans have the right to know.
