STATEHOUSE—Indiana Senators have given up on a proposal to let local governments swap property tax cuts for a new income tax.
Senate Tax Policy Chairman Luke Kenley says it's not a partisan dispute: he says neither party in the house shares the Senate's willingness to embrace the new taxes that would be necessary to offset property tax cuts.
Kenley says he'll try to reach agreement on short-term tax relief before the session ends Tuesday. House Ways and Means Chairman Jeff Espich has suggested shifting Child Welfare costs to the state. Kenley says he's not sure what the effect on services would be.
