The following obituaries were received Tuesday -

Dennis Lee Turner - Oolitic

Dennis Lee Turner, 63, of Oolitic, died Sunday, Septemeber 25, 2011 at IU Health Bloomington Hospita, in Bloomington, Indiana.

Dennis was born December 20, 1947 in Bedford, Indiana to Perry and Gladys (Kelly) Turner. He married Vickie Sowders and then Denise Patton on May 1, 1996 in Bedford, Indiana, and she survives.

Dennis was a retired plasterer. He was a member of Bethel Country Church, the VFW in Oolitic and Legion Gillien Post 33. Dennis was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran.

Surviving are his wife Denise Turner, of Oolitic; one son Charles Lee and his wife Jennifer, both of Bedford; one daughter, Angela Turner Taylor, of Heltonville; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Jones, of Bedford and Karly Morrow, of Oolitic; nine grandchildren, Ashley and Alston Taylor, Brant and Brayton Turner, Jordan Page, Ashley Jones and Kennedy, Emilee and Breanna Morrow; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by one brother, Charles Franklin Turner.

Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Hanson Cemetery, in Monroe County. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Gillen Post 33.

A memorial service at Hanson Cemetery Shelter House will follow burial. Arrangements are under the direction of Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford, Indiana.

Melva Blume Sherfick - Shoals

Melva Blume Sherfick, 89, of Shoals, Indiana, went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 24, 2011 at 3:25 p.m. at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Melva was born June 11, 1922, along with her twin sister Margaret June, to Noah and Ollie (Jones) Kerns, in Martin County, Indiana near Rusk.

Melva married Howard Sherfick on April 15, 1945. Upon his passing on May 23, 2011, they had been married for 66 years.

Melva was a faithful and dedicated member of the Shoals Christian Church. She was extremely active and served on several church committees over the years, including missions and kitchen ministry; however she most enjoyed being the nursery superintendent for many years. She deeply loved the Lord, her church and her church family.

Melva was an active 50-year-member of the Town & Country Home Extension Club, member of the Jug Rox Grandmothers Club, Flower and Garden Club and former member of the Martin County Fair Board. Melva and her twin June enjoyed a friendly competition for many years exhibiting flowers and vegetables in the Open Class at the Martin County 4-H Fair.

Melva loved her flowers indoors and outdoors. She was an avid gardener and always had a bountiful harvest which she shared with family and friends.

Melva worked at Shoals Bus Stop for 4 years during World War II. She then started one of the first actual day care centers in 1946. She cared for many, many children for 30 plus years, and was an accomplished homemaker.

Melva loved and was very devoted to her family which includes: daughter Linda June and her husband Richard Hawkins of Shoals; sons David and his wife Sonja Sherfick, of Loogootee and John Daniel and his wife Nancy Sherfick, of Bedford; nine grandchildren Rod and his wife Mimi Hawkins, Mark and his wife Missy Hawkins, Lea and her husband Shawn Cullison, Tamar and her husband Kent Greenwell, Grant Sherfick, Lynette and her husband Chris Newman, Evan and his wife Jean Sherfick, Mason and Seth Sherfick; 13 great grandchildren: Shelby Sands, Ethan Sands, Emily Sands, Ashley Hawkins, Michael Hawkins, Ryan Hawkins, Megan Hawkins, Melanie Hawkins, Cati Greenwell, Seth Greenwell, Sophie Greenwell, Reagan Sherfick, Everett Sherfick and Crosby Sherfick.

She is survived by her twin sister Margaret June Hendrix, of French Lick.

Melva is preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Essie Mae Harder, Grace Fuhrman, Mary Harder and five brothers, Homer, Oscar, Alton, Ollis and Walter Bert Kerns.

Viewing will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Shoals Christian Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Springhill Cemetery, in Shoals.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in memory of Melva Blume Sherfick to the Shoals Christian Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
