Banks Warning Residents Of Email Scams

(UNDATED) - Area banks are warning southern Indiana residents of a wide-spread e-mail scam that is sweeping through southern Indiana.

Residents are reportedly receiving emails that claim to be sent from the FDIC, informing recipients that their bank has failed and that they need to confirm information with their account by clicking on a link in the email.

Dale Altsadt with German American Bancorp says that the FDIC does not communicate this way and recipients of the email should both ignore and delete them.

Altstadt says that con-artists use this information to either steal a person's identity or empty-out their bank account.

He advises that nothing can be done about the emails because they are impossible to trace.
