(MITCHELL) - Bloomington state troopers will be honoring an officer who fell in the line of duty 47 years ago in Lawrence County.

Troopers will be at Cresthaven Memory Gardens this afternoon to honor Trooper Robert Gillespie who died in a wreck near Mitchell in 1962.

47 years ago, Gillepsie was responding to help another trooper in Lawrence County with his lights on when he had to duck off the road to miss a truck that slowed down in front of him, but then had to come back onto the roadway to miss a second vehicle, and then was struck and killed by a third vehicle.

Gillespie was 33 years old at the time, and had almost a dozen years of service under his belt.
