(SCOTLAND) - Two young boys from the Crane naval base area are in critical condition after a gasoline explosion Saturday afternoon.

The Greene County Daily World reports Nicholas Decker of Scotland, and Joshua Merritt of Crane Village, both between 10 and 11 years old, suffered severe burns along most of their bodies in the accident.

Both boys were airlifted to Riley Children's Hospital where they remain in their burn unit.

The paper says Richland-Taylor Volunteer Fire Department Chief Randy Baker, who lives near the accident site, heard the explosion and, along with two other neighbors, helped extinguish the flames on the two young men.

Baker says the cause of the accident is still under investigation, and all they know now is that it involved gasoline and a wood pile.
