Particle Accelerator Gets Final Funding, Won't Be Done For "Year Or Two"

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University has formally received $1.17 million in federal funding toward the completion of an advanced linear accelerator located at IU’s Cyclotron Facility in Bloomington.

LINAC accelerates subatomic particles to create short, intense bursts of radiation. Steve Chaplain with IU's Office of Communications says LINAC will replace an outdated particle accelerator still in use at the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center. Crane is partnering with IU to develop LINAC which won't be operational for another year or two.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center will use it to support department of defense space and missile systems studies. IU plans to use it for teaching and research primarily in the life sciences.

Officials from IU, the US Navy and US Representative Baron Hill participated in Monday's ceremony that formally recognized the latest round of federal funding for the project.
