IU Professor Optimistic About Swine Flu Problem

(UNDATED) - With the discovery of swine flu in Indiana, at the Notre Dame campus, state and local officials are continuing to work on being prepared for any spread of the illness.

However, analysts at the Indiana University School of Informatics have run computer models about the possible spread of the disease nationwide and, frankly, what they're finding isn't that bad.

Informatics Professor Alessandro Vespignani believes that, worst case scenario, the US will see about 1,000 confirmed cases of swine flu.

At the same time he believes that, as time passes, the predictions will most likely become more optimistic considering the awareness the issue is being given and the seriousness with which it is being taken.

Health officials statewide are still encouraging people to wash hands frequently, use hand sanitizer, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and perhaps pass on that hearty handshake.
