Convicted Bank Robber Killed In Car/Scooter Accident
(BLOOMINGTON) - A scooter rider in Bloomingon was killed yesterday after an accident at 3rd Street and Patterson Drive.
The Bloomington Herald Times reports 53-year-old Gary Crohn was getting ready to turn left from 3rd Street onto Patterson in his SUV, waited for another vehicle to pass by, and then pulled out, not seeing the scooter.
The scooter, driven by 41-year-old Robert Lewellen, plowed into the passenger side of the SUV, while not wearing a helmet. Police say Lewellen was unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon at Bloomington Hospital.
The paper reports Lewellen was a familiar face to Bloomington police, having been accused in several bank robberies in years past, and receiving at least one conviction back in 2002, and pleading guilty to two more bank robbery charges in 2006.
