(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford has a nice chunk of federal change heading its way, for the Plaza Drive Project, which, in this part, would connect US-50 to IN-37.

$2.67 million is the magic number for this funding influx, which is coming from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as the federal stimulus bill.

INDOT officials say Bedford Mayor Shawna Girgis, on behalf of the city, was working on a similar funding request via Congressman Steve Buyer's office. One of the reasons this project was approved for this funding was because the plaza drive project is considered "shovel ready," or ready to start work right away.

The funding request is supported by Congressman Buyer, who voted against the stimulus bill, because he says he supports shovel-ready projects, and not social spending and social programs.

INDOT has approved funding via the federal stimulus bill for two other nearby counties. INDOT says Orange County will get pipe lining along IN-145 for about 8 miles north of IN-164.

In Bartholomew County, traffic signals will be improved and turning lanes added at the intersection of IN-11 and CR450 South. No listing of funding dollars, however, has been made available for these and other nearby projects.

Other projects have also been approved for slightly further-out counties including Dubois, Vigo, Johnson, and Dearborn.

The statewide work list includes a total of 29 projects in 21 counties, and $43.6 million.
