(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County has a new, overall spelling champion, this year from Bedford Middle School.

Hannah Hawkins, a 7th grader from BMS, took top honors in the WBIW Lawrence County spelling bee yesterday afternoon.

However, in an almost equal feat of lexicology (L-E-X-I-C-O-L-O-G-Y, lexicology), Tuesday's elementary champion, Aleister Hale, a 4th grader from Lincoln Elementary, took 1st runner up status, beating out all other 6th, 7th, and 8th graders other than Hawkins.

2nd runner up went to Shawswick 6th grader Eric Cecil, and 3rd runner up went to Oolitic 6th grader Atalie Klumpp.

Hawkins, being the champ, won a $100 savings bond, a trophy, a WBIW T-shirt, and, most importantly, a ticket to the 2009 derby festival spelling bee in Louisville on March 14th.

Congratulations Hannah Hawkins, and good luck in Kentucky!
