Southern Indiana Hit Hard With Snow And Ice
(UNDATED) - Anywhere from 7 to 9 inches of snow has fallen over Central and Southern Indiana.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Steve Haines says the snow will continue to fall to the late morning hours or early afternoon.
Some ice also fell in South Central Indiana, causing problems from Johnson County to the south.
Haines says the northern half of the state fared better than the southern half, since this storm just packed on snow on top of about 3 inches already on the ground in Southern Indiana.
Haines also says there are no more winter storms in the next few days, but the snow on the ground will make it colder, with single digits Friday morning.
Emergencies and close calls blamed on winter storm
State and city snowplow drivers worked through the night to clear major roads of an expected snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches.
The National Weather Service posted a winter storm warning through noon today.
The snowstorm -- the heaviest in two years -- was blamed for at least one traffic death in Southern Indiana.
Five people escaped injury when the roof of an Evansville home collapsed.
Vectren customers left in the dark
The winter storm that coated Southern Indiana with freezing rain, sleet and snow worsened late Tuesday as the number of homes and businesses without power increased.
Vectren customers without power numbered 27,000 last night.
Vectren officials say customers should brace for being in the dark for several days.
Counties declare Level II emergencies
Jackson County and Lawrence County emergency management has issued a level 2 warning for motorists.
Only essential travel is recommended. Emergency actions plans have been or should be implemented by businesses, school, government agencies and other organizations.
