(INDIANAPOLIS) - The name change for the Ora L. Wildermuth Intramural Center at IU Bloomington may be on hiatus.

The IU Board of Trustees said not quite yet to adding the name of William L. Garrett to the building's name.

The Wildermuth name has been under criticism lately, especially from the student newspaper, the Indiana Daily Student, for segregationist comments made by former IU trustee Ora Wildermuth several decades ago.

The addition of the Garrett name was suggested since Garrett was a basketball player for IU in the 1940s that played home games in that gymnasium, and was also IU's first African American varsity basketball player.

As a result, IU President Michael McRobbie is withdrawing his recommendation of the change, and is sending the proposal back to the naming committee for new ideas.
