Copper Still Lucrative Target For Thieves
(BEDFORD) - Copper thefts continue to plague South Central Indiana.
Around 6:00am this morning, an employee at Bedford Recycling called police saying there had been a break-in and copper wiring was taken.
Bedford Police Colonel Dan Kirk tells WBIW News scraps of copper wire were found in a bread-crumb style trail from the inside of the facility, to the south door which had been pried open, and out to the wooded area behind the recycling center.
Kirk says Bedford detectives are in constant contact with area scrap yards due to the frequency of copper thefts, and the amount of money it costs victims with copper prices on such a sharp rise.
As copper stocks continue to decrease, copper prices go up, as high as about $4.10 per pound at the end of June.
Although the New York Mercantile Exchange has the price of copper plotted at about $3.50 today.
