Semi Driver In Fatal Accident Didn't Have Commercial Endorsement

(AVOCA) - An accident at the intersection of IN-37 and IN-54 involving a tractor trailer last night claimed the life of at least 1 driver.

Lawrence County deputies and other emergency crews were called to the IN-37/IN-54 intersection sometime before 6:00pm last night to an accident which involved a tractor trailer and shut down most of IN-37 for several hours.

Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig tells WBIW News a pickup driven by 59-year-old Myra Arnold was turning from IN-54 onto northbound IN-37, and when she crossed the southbound lanes of IN-37, a flatnosed Kenworth K100 struck her pickup on the side and then both pushed the pickup across the northbound lanes of IN-37.

Craig says at this time, current reports indicate Arnold had the right-of-way, but that is one part of the incident that is currently under investigation.

Both vehicles wound up facing southbound in the northbound lanes on the right side of the road.

The driver killed in the accident has been identified as 59-year-old Myra Arnold of Lake Wales, Florida. Her passenger, 13-year-old Alexis Krebbs, was flown by helicopter for medical treatment in Indianapolis.

The driver of the semi involved, 20-year-old Robert Shields, was cited for Operating a Commercial Vehicle without a Commercial Endorsement.

Craig says the accident was a "tragedy," but it was also "a blessing nobody else got killed." Craig notes the intersection of IN-37 and IN-54 is a very busy intersection.
