Holiday Means Extra Patrols For DNR Officers

(UNDATED) - All holidays are busy, but Independence Day weekend is the busiest on Indiana’s waterways.

And just like state police, Indiana DNR officers will be out with extra patrols. Those working patrols will likely write more tickets to boat drivers who are drinking and driving than for any other offense.

DNR spokeswoman Angela Goldman says there's no open container law for alcohol on boats, but the boat driver must remain sober. The law is the same as it is for those driving a car...anyone with a blood-alcohol-content of .08 or higher is breaking the law.

Boaters are required to have life jackets aboard for every passenger and need a throw preserver in bigger boats.

Goldman says boaters and swimmers should watch for extra debris in the water because of last month's flood.
