Police Warning Of Increase In Fuel Thefts

(UNDATED) - Indiana State Police are warning Hoosier drivers of a relatively recent phenomenon…fuel theft.

That's right, people siphoning gas right out of your automobile's tank. There's already been one complaint to Mitchell police about this.

Police nationwide have seen a jump in fuel thefts from both your gas tank, and from the gas station pumps, and are blaming it on the rising price of gasoline.

State police are advising gas station owners to keep vigilant, use a good surveillance system, require wither pre-payment or paying at the pump, remove obstructive signage and material from store windows and even have someone outside manning the pumps, like a customer service agent.

For drivers, police recommend parking in the garage if you have one, installing a locking gas cap, and don't fill your tank all the way.

For both station owners and drivers, the state police are clear, if you see a theft, get as much information as possible, but don't pursue.

That's what officers are for.
