(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington state trooper was recognized Monday for his actions in a dangerous situation in September of 2006.

In that incident, the Bloomington post says Trooper Ryan White was off duty in his marked cruiser on IN-46 near Spencer when he went to stop a pickup for a traffic violation.

The truck led White on a 3-mile chase, and then finally stopped, got out and started approaching White with a knife.

White ordered the man to drop his knife, which he didn't, and eventually White would have to discharge his sidearm, striking the suspect in the chest.

For this, white was awarded the Combat Action Award, which is issued to officers who, "[Perform] in an intelligent, courageous, responsible manner involving self-sacrifice while at risk that involved elevated circumstances of danger to the officer."
