(UNDATED) - State police are warning of a check scam that seems to have been one of the better orchestrated ones yet.

A Putnam County couple received a Shoppers' Sweepstakes check in the mail for $4,890, saying they had won a random drawing.

The included letter, from a company listed as Starmark Financial, Inc., says once they cash the check, they should go through a Western Union or Moneygram to wire back almost $3,000 to cover taxes.

And that's where your red alert should go off.

Attorney General Steve Carter says there is no reason someone should ask you to wire money back if they send you a check. The scary part about this one is the check is seemingly legitimate.

Even the bank didn't catch it since it went through, but later came back as "insufficient funds."
