Police Warn Of *72 Phone Scam
(UNDATED) - State police are warning Hoosiers of another phone scam that has started turning up in Northwestern Indiana, especially up near Lowell.
The scam involves someone calling your telephone reporting a car accident or other emergency, and then asks you to call a number for help or more information.
However, that number they ask you to call begins with a *72. Never dial *72 unless you know what's going on.
That number is a custom call-forwarding feature that will send all your incoming calls, collect, international and everything in between, to the number you dial afterwards, whether it be a cell phone, someone else's home phone or a pay phone.
The suspect can then rack up phone charges on your dime.
If you think you have been taken by this scam, first, dial *73 to end call forwarding, and then call police with the number that you were asked to dial.
