Fire Set At Lawrence County Jail Sunday Night
(BEDFORD) - It was a hot time at the old jail last night.
The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department and Bedford Fire Department reports a small fire was intentionally set by an N-Block inmate at the Lawrence County Security Center shortly before 8:30 last night.
Bedford Fire Chief Scott Gillespie tells WBIW News the call came to them at 8:25pm, and they called all hands and 5 vehicles to the jail, but by the time they arrived, the fire had been extinguished.
Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig tells WBIW News the fire was allegedly started by an inmate as a response to the lockdown underway in the "N" cell block.
Craig says the inmate managed to set a book on fire. The cell block was evacuated and the inmates were moved to another location within the Security Center, and no injuries are listed by either Sheriff's or fire officials.
Bedford firefighters set up fans to vent smoke out of the prison afterwards, and Lawrence County detectives are investigating the incident.
So far, no names or charges have been released.
