Bloomington Pair, County Officer Save Heltonville Woman's Life
(BLOOMINGTON) - Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies tag teamed with a pair of alert Bloomington citizens to save the life of a Heltonville woman Friday night.
According to the report released by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, two people saw 39-year-old Katherine Shedd of Heltonville partially parked on Chapel Hill Road near Guthrie Road, and noticed she seemed intoxicated.
When the pair confronted Shedd to try to get out of the car and stop driving, they say Shedd yelled and screamed at them and drove off.
The two individuals called 911 and gave the police reports of where the woman was heading as they followed her, and then, after she turned on to Stewart Road from Chapel Hill.
They then advised they could hear Shedd screaming and yelling for help.
When officers arrived, all they could see was the top of Shedd's vehicle sinking in the flood waters of Lake Monroe, and Shedd clinging to a tree about 60 feet from the water's edge.
Monroe County's Sgt. Dave Goodrich dumped his belt and jumped in the water, bringing Shedd back to safety.
Both were taken to Bloomington Hospital where they were both pronounced in stable condition and the Sheriff's Department will seek charges pending the results of toxicology tests.
