State Police Say Meth Lab Busts On The Decline

(UNDATED) - According to statistics from Indiana State Police Master Trooper Chip Ayers, the number of meth labs shutdown annually used to be 1,600, but that number has shrunk to about 800 over the past few years.

He says smaller communities, especially in southeast and southwest Indiana, are hardest hit. Use of meth in small communities creates economic problems.

Ayers says it's tough for the smaller, rural police departments to keep up with the fight because of funding and staffing issues.

Once the problem starts in a community, it's hard to solve. Ayers says 94% of meth users continue using, even after seeking drug counseling.

Another staggering statistic, Ayers says every year, one experienced meth lab cook teaches up to ten additional people how to make meth.
