Bloomington Center Organizing Vigil For Tibet

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Tibetan Mongolian Buddist Cultural Center in Bloomington is paying close attention to the violence and strife occurring in Tibet and China.

Director Arjia Rinpoche says the local center will host a prayer service and candlelight vigil this evening to pray for the Tibetan people and those who have been killed and injured in the strife.

The vigil will take place at 6:00pm with 8 different religious organizations participating. The violence stemmed from the annual protest on the anniversary of the Chinese occupation in Tibet.

Rinpoche says the protest got out of control out of frustration with the continued occupation of the country.

Many Tibetans have lost their sources of income in one particular town because of Chinese takeovers of their stores and no recourse of action because of the lack of human rights.

Rinpoche says it is hard to get accurate information from the region because of Chinese control over the media.

The local Tibetan leader says any and all attention to their struggle is appreciated and encourages westerners to get more involved by learning more about how the Chinese government suppresses the country.
