IU Musicians Win Big At Grammy Awards
(BLOOMINGTON) - And the Grammny goes to…Indiana University! The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and it’s alumni were awarded 6 Grammy Awards in Sunday night’s ceremony.
IU faculty member and conductor Leonard Slatkin won Grammy Awards for best classical album, best orchestral performance and best classical contemporary composition.
Jazz saxophonist and Iu alumnus Michael Brecker won posthumous Grammys for jazz instrumental solo and best jazz instrumental album.
Jazz artist John Clayton won a Grammy for best instrumental arrangement accompanying a vocalist.
Slatkin's wins bring him to a career total of 8 Grammys from 50 nominations.
Brecker, who passed away last year, attended Indiana University in the 60s, and had the opportunity to play with legends like Aerosmith, Elton John, John Lennon and even had a stint with the Saturday Night Live Band.
Clayton's win comes from a cooperative effort with Queen Latifah on her second jazz album covering the song "I'm Gonna Live 'Til I Die," which was first recorded by "Ol' Blue Eyes" himself, Frank Sinatra.
