Victim's Family Files Civil Suit Against Sniper, Family
(NEW ALBANY) - If you shoot someone on the highway and plead guilty, that doesn’t mean everything’s over.
According to the Floyd County Circuit Court, the family of Jerry Ross, the New Albany man killed in the sniper shootings on Interstate 65 in 2006 have filed a civil suit against 18-year-old Zacariah Blanton, the shooter, his grandparents who were his legal guardians at the time, and other family members who were along on the hunting trip with Blanton the weekend of the shooting.
The lawsuit, seeking unspecified damages, alleges his relatives were negligent when they let him walk off the site with his hunting rifle while he was angry, saying Blanton had a, "plethora of problems with anger and dysfunction."
In addition to killing Jerry Ross, Blanton also injured an Iowa man.
Blanton was sentenced to 42 years in prison after pleading guilty in December.
