Steele Pushes Constitutional Ban On Gay Marriage

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Bedford State Senator Brent Steele has helped push an amendment to the state Constitution banning same-sex marriage through the Senate Judiciary Committee and on to the Senate floor.

The measure passed the committee on a strict party-line vote, with 5 Republicans voting "aye," including Steele, and 4 Democrats voting "no."

The measure, which defines marriage specifically as between "one man and one woman," passed through the General Assembly in 2005, but any amendment to the state Constitution must pass 2 separately elected sessions of the legislature, and then pass a referendum vote on the ballot.

However, if the measure doesn't pass both houses this year, it would have to start over entirely.

Senator Steele expressed doubt, however, that it would even be heard in the Democratic controlled House this session.
