Buyer, Hill Of Different Minds On State Of The Union

(WASHINGTON, D.C) - The Bedford areas two Congressmen have issued responses to President Bush’s State of the Union address which aired last night.

Republican 4th District Congressman Steve Buyer, whose district includes Lawrence County, lauded the President's take on what he calls the "economic uncertainties" America faces in the coming years, and his theme of, "empowerment, personal responsibility and a secure America."

He says Congress should work toward Bush's theme as it moves forward.

However, Democratic 9th District Congressman Baron Hill, whose district surrounds Lawrence County to the east, south, and also includes Bloomington, has a different tack on last nights address, saying, "the President's recent emphasis on fiscal conservancy...[is] simply too late."

Hill criticizes the President's and former Republican Congress' tossing aside of Pay-as-you-Go (PAYGO) rules, and says he has introduced a bill that would make those rules law, instead of Congressional procedure.

Pay-as-you-Go was a system implemented during the time of the Clinton Administration that said, in short, Congress cannot enact new spending without saying where the money comes from.
