Bloomington Fraternity Shut Down By Ethics Board
(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University has closed the Bloomington campus chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity for two years.
The decision, which was made after talking with the chapter's national headquarters and alumni and student officers from the group, was based on a finding that the organization violated the university's regulation prohibiting hazing. The campus student organization ethics board recommended the action after conducting a hearing in November.
IU Dean of Students Richard McHaig says the violations include sleep deprivation, leaving brothers in a remote location and requiring them to walk back to campus, inciting fear and threatening bodily harm.
The expulsion means chapter members will not be permitted to take part in university- sponsored or supervised activities under the name Alpha Epsilon Pi. The chapter was first chartered in Bloomington in 1958.
