Avoid Frozen Pipes With Simple Tips

(UNDATED) - With temperatures ranging from negative digits to the low to mid-teens this weekend, you might want to think ahead to protect the water pipes in your home.

Attaboy Plumbing Owner Richard Baney says you can take a few precautionary steps to avoid frozen pipes and a flood.

Baney suggests disconnecting any hoses still attached to outside spickets and closing outside crawl space vents. Interior sink pipes in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms on outside walls can be kept warm by opening cabinet doors and leaving a trickle of water running to keep water moving in the pipes.

Baney says should the pipes freeze, turn off your water at the source and run water from a different sink to relieve water pressure in the system, then allow warm air into the frozen area to help thaw the pipes and avoid any bursts.

Finally, Baney says if you plan to be gone for a couple of days, turn off your water at the source to avoid any mishaps while you're gone. It is very common for people to come home to a flooded home because the pipes burst while they were away.
