State Troopers Offer Winter Safe Driving Tips

(UNDATED) - The Indiana State Police are issuing a number of safe driving tips for the upcoming winter season, and holiday travel season.

Sergeant Richard Myers says drivers should make sure they are prepared before heading out on trips, including checking the forecast along your route, making sure others know where you're going, keep your gas tank full and bring a winter emergency kit including flashlights, blankets, food and sand.

Troopers also recommend allowing extra time to get where you're going as roads may become unexpectedly unfriendly; make sure all windows are clear and to not use cruise control on slick roads.

Finally, if you are unfortunate enough to actually become stranded on your trip, don't leave your car, keep your tailpipe clear to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, and to not panic.

Interestingly enough, an idling car only uses about 1 gallon of gas per hour.
