(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested last night for public intoxication after checking to see what his buddy was being confronted by police about.

Bedford police say they made a traffic stop on R Street between 15th and 16th when a man walked by unsteadily.

After completing the stop, officers went and found 25-year-old Steven Coffin, the man they allege walked by, near 16th and P Streets.

When officers confronted Coffin, they say he took off running, but was caught shortly by officers, and that's when they allegedly smelled the alcohol. Coffin was arrested and charged with public intoxication.

According to the report, Coffin told police he had heard his friend's name on the police scanner, so he apparently decided to walk by and check it out.
