IU Professor Testifies In Attorney General Confirmation
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - An Indiana University law professor has testified in the confirmation hearing of Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey.
Professor Dawn Johnsen, a former employee of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC), told the Senate Judiciary Committee the office must , "...be prepared to tell the president, 'no.'"
Johnson was a member of the OLC from 1993 to 1998, and was head of the office, serving as acting Assistant Attorney General, from 1997 to 1998.
Johnsen, during her testimony, says the OLC's work has been compromised, and should present the administration with accurate and honest legal advice, taking special concern with the current OLC's conduct regarding detainee interrogation, especially the 2002 "Torture Memo."
Johnsen currently teaches courses on Constitutional Law and the First Amendment, among others, at the IU School of Law.
