Dalai Lama Kicks Off Visit To Bloomington Today

(BLOOMINGTON) - His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet begins his six-day visit to Bloomington today, kicking it off with an interfaith service held at St. Paul’s Catholic Center on 17th Street.

After the service this morning, the Dalai Lama will be present at a ribbon cutting for a new arch at the Tibetan Cultural Center at Snoddy Road.

The rest of the week, the dalai lama will be holding a series of 3 classes Wednesday through Friday at the IU Auditorium, culminating his visit on Saturday with a public talk entitled "Compassion: the Source of Peace."

In addition to his public work, the Dalai Lama is also visiting his brother, Thubten Norbu, who is a professor at Indiana University.

Prior to his arrival, President Bush presented the Dalai Lama with the Congressional Gold Medal in Washington, making Bush the first US president to meet with the Dalai Lama in public, and igniting controversy in China, which has held the Dalai Lama in exile for decades.

For those who still wish to attend the public talk on Saturday, tickets are still available at the IU box office.
