Bedford PD: Too Many Cars Left Unlocked, Stolen

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Police Department is expressing concern over a large increase in vehicle thefts this summer.

BPD Public Information Officer Maj. Dennis Parsley told WBIW news that, over this summer, there has been a rash of vehicle thefts and, he says, most of them are preventable.

Major Parsley indicated that, as far as he knew, not a single vehicle theft he's worked with this summer has involved a forcible entry. This means vehicles are being left unlocked. He also stated that around half of these stolen vehicles are not only unlocked, but have the keys left in them.

The recovery rate of stolen vehicles is reportedly good, however, a large percentage of these recovered vehicles are trashed, burned or otherwise destroyed. Maj. Parsley says he cannot stress enough the need to lock doors and retain vehicle keys.

This comes on the heels of 2 stolen vehicle reports in the past 24 hours, one, a Yamaha scooter, and the other, an older Dodge Dakota pickup.
