(MARENGO) - The subject of caves will bring thousands of people from around the world to Southern Indiana next week.

The National Speleological Society Conference is taking place in Crawford County at the fairgrounds.

Kriste Lindberg of the Indiana Karst Conservancy says caves hold interest for hydrologists, biologists, paleontologists, geologists and those in other areas of science. Spelunkers are interested in the recreational component in cave exploration.

She says cave research in Indiana has sprung to the forefront of world attention, in large part through the web-based project called Cave Biota, a site featuring underground film and photography and interviews with scientists explaining various features and phenomena within Indiana caves.

The Indiana karst topography region stretches from Putnam County along a relatively narrow belt that runs through Bloomington and Bedford through Crawford County, near the Ohio River, and on down to Mammoth Cave, Kentucky.
