Friend Remembers Fallen Firefighter
(WASHINGTON) - A fellow firefighter of the Indiana native killed while battling a blaze in Charleston, South Carolina is remembering his close friend as an energetic and free-spirited individual.
Captain Brian Crop says he, and former Washington, Indiana resident Mark Kelsey, decided to join the Charlestown fire department together more than 10 years ago.
Crop says they formed a friendship after Kelsey left Indiana, joined the Navy, and moved to Charlestown. The two often rode motorcycles together in their spare time.
Town officials are determining how to help the family that still lives in Washington with a fund raiser.
Kelsey and eight others were killed when flames engulfed a furniture store, causing the roof to collapse.
The fire was the deadliest single disaster for U.S. firefighters since the 9/11 terror attacks.
