(LOOGOOTEE) - A Loogootee man has been arrested following a series of events including stealing two vehicles.
Thirty-two-year-old Michael Ray Hert began by stealing a Mercury owned by Mark Sherer, of Loogootee. Hert drove to a Bellbrook Road home and went inside. Homeowner James Burch confronted Hert and was struck in the head by him with a hammer. Both began to struggle with each other.
Hert then fled on foot and tried to steal a pickup truck owned by another Bellbrook Road resident. The truck owner was able to stall Hert until State Police arrived at the scene.
Hert was taken into custody. Police discovered he had a checkbook belonging to the truck owner. Hert was charged with burglary, aggravated battery, residential entry and two counts of auto theft.
