Orleans Police Chief Justified In Man's Death

Last updated on Monday, November 20, 2006

(ORLEANS) - An Indiana State Police investigator says a preliminary investigation reveals that Orleans Police Chief Roy McFarland was justified in using deadly force against an Orange County man who tried several times to injure law enforcement officers.

47-year-old Kevin Cook was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon. Cook was shot in the chest after disregarding orders to drop a shotgun he was carrying.

During a police chase which preceded the gun battle, Cook attempted to strike on-coming police vehicles and finally made contact with the driver's side door of McFarland's car, before continuing for another 225 feet and landing in a ditch.
