Orleans Man Dead After Shootout
(ORLEANS) - An Orleans man is dead after police tried to serve a search warrant.
Officers went to the rural home of 47-year-old Kevin Cook. A warrant had been issued for Cook's arrest for his failure to appear in court. After deputies arrived, Cook left holding a shotgun. He aimed a weapon at police before leaving.
Police chased Cook on several county roads thorough Orange County. During the chase Cook attempted to strike on-coming police cruisers. At one point he hit an Orleans Police vehicle driven by Orleans Police Chief Roy McFarland. Cook's truck came to rest in a ditch.
At that point, Cook tried to shoot McFarland. McFarland had to crawl out of his cruiser and take cover behind the car. McFarland shot back at Cook and hit him in the chest.
Cook was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. McFarland was not injured. The Indiana State Police continue to investigate the situation.
