(BEDFORD) - On this Thanksgiving Day, many families are preparing the main turkey by various means.

The Bedford Fire Department is discouraging the use of a turkey fryer. The unique devices have a high risk of fires and injuries.

Tests have shown that many of the fryers have a risk of tipping over, overheating, or spilling hot oil, leading to fires and burns. As much as five gallons of oil needs to be heated to high temperatures before putting the turkey into the unit.

Independent product safety-testing labels may be present on the devices, however, in some instances, these certificates do not apply to the entire unit.

The Bedford Fire Department says an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Hot oil can reach temperatures as high as 350 degrees and can quickly catch a house or garage on fire.

This holiday season be alert as you enjoy your days off with family and friends.
