(HAWAII) - Hawaiians have begun cleaning up from the damage of the 6.6 level earthquake that hit the Islands early Sunday morning.
Two of those people are former residents of Bedford. Jim and Edna Anderson have been living in Hawaii for nearly a year and live just 10 miles south of the epicenter of Sunday's earthquake. Anderson was a local businessman who was instrumental in building The Woods housing development north of Bedford.
In a phone conversation with Jim, he said he was awakened by the quake while his wife was out walking at the time. He said he felt 3 of the reported 15 aftershocks. Most of the damage was broken glass and bottles knocked off shelves. He said nearly every shop owner had some form of damage to their stores. Anderson said big boulders had fallen on many of the roads. He said the area's hotels were not allowing anyone to leave following the earthquake and cruise ships left port to avoid a possible tsunami.
Nearly all of the 5 hospitals were swamped with injured islanders, however, no one had died from the earthquake. After phone service was restored, Anderson was able to call his children, who live here in the states and tell them they were all right.
