(BEDFORD) - A crowd of dentists and Bedford water officials were present at yesterday’s Board of Works meeting at the Bedford City Hall concerning putting fluoride back in the water system.
About two years ago, fluoride was removed without much notice. Recently, the move was discovered and a push to bring back the chemical was started.
Bedford City Utilities Director Mike Mitchell told the board he had talked with the Indiana Department of Health on reinstating fluoride back into the water system. It was decided to build a small building to house fluoride in liquid form.
Originally, it was a powder form and officials worried in time it would eventually clog the water pipes. The liquid form is considered much purer. The building will cost about $17,000 to build and should be up and running within a few months.
Back in 1953, Bedford was part of a pilot program to introduce fluoride into the water system. The city had received a certificate commemorating 50 years of continuous fluoridation.
