Bedford Council Approves Several Tax Abatements

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford City Council met in their regular session Tuesday night with a lengthy agenda.

A public hearing was held concerning an unimproved street in the Meadowlake Addition near 30th and "V" Streets. Several property owners want the city to give up the alleyway and turn it into a driveway. The council tabled the issue until board members could examine the area more thoroughly. Meanwhile, a resolution was passed to earmark $6,000 for a grant application to study the feasibility of improving the Bedford Convention Center, formerly the J.C. Penney store, in downtown Bedford. Funding will come from the CFF of the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs if the study shows improvements are needed.

Several Bedford businesses reapplying for tax abatements were approved by the council, however, Metal Technologies, Inc. is planning to move its business to Bloomfield into a larger facility and the board tabled their request until more information could be garnered. In other business, the board approved an additional $100,000 to the Street Department to help with rising costs of repaving the city streets. The main reason for the increase is raising gas prices.

Council members approved transferring about $2,000 to the Bedford Police Department. The money will be used to pay for a new laptop computer and for a Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE, costume. Board member Brandy Hughes said she wants to see DARE Officer Joe Fender wear the costume at the next board meeting when the lion suit arrives!
